Meet the citizens who decided to rewrite the fate of Palermo by taking on the Mafia.


LEOLUCA ORLANDO
Five times mayor of Palermo since 1985 and is recognized for openly opposing the Mafia. It is one of the referents of the Culture of Legality in Italy. He is president of the Institute for the Sicilian Renaissance, an NGO that promotes the economy, the Culture of Legality and human rights. Author of the book "Towards a Culture of Legality: the Sicilian experience".

ADDIOPIZZO
Movement founded in 2004 by a group of friends with plans to open a bar, but who were opposed to paying for the pizzo , a form of extortion by the Sicilian Mafia that guaranteed protection.
It promotes a Mafia-free economy through critical consumption, which is buy on establishments that do not pay pizzo . In addition, they support businesses that are extorted to free themselves from this practice and join the anti-mafia movement.
Their motto: "A town that pays pizza is a town without dignity."

Research professors who thoroughly explored the problems of Sicily. One of his main works is titled Reversible Destiny: Mafia, Antimafia and the Palermo Struggle where they show a deep analysis of the connections between organized crime, politics and social movements that can be extrapolated to similar situations in other parts of the world.

ROBERTA GATANI
Niece of Paolo Borsellino, one of the main heroes of the anti-mafia fight, and administrator of the Casa de Paolo. The family decided to adapt an old pharmacy that belonged to their uncle to turn it into a space of hope and new possibilities for the youth of the neighborhood. They carry out extracurricular activities aimed at children in vulnerable situations. They teach children how to live legality in their day-to-day life.

Centro Internazionale di Documentazione sulla Mafia e del Movimento Antimafia (CIDMA)
Museum located in Corleone that presents the full history of the Mafia. The objective is to show the events as they happened, so that the new generations learn and maintain the fight against the Mafia.
In the Museum are the archives of the Maxiprocreso, a series of trials that imprisoned hundreds of gangsters.
BUILDING CARD
Activist and one of the founders of Scorta Cívica, an association that seeks to eliminate relations and agreements between the State and the Mafia. It is characterized by holding demonstrations in front of the Palace of Justice, to create a line of support for the magistrates and demand justice.
